Great Migration

The great wildebeest migration is one of nature's most spectacular phenomena. Every year, over 2 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle undertake a massive circular journey across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing grounds.

The Migration Cycle

The migration is a continuous clockwise movement following the rains:

  • January to March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti. Over 400,000 wildebeest are born during this period.
  • April to May: The herds move west and north as the short rains end.
  • June to July: The great herds begin their journey to the northern Serengeti.
  • July to October: The iconic river crossings at the Mara River. This is the most dramatic part of the migration.
  • November: The herds start moving south again as the short rains begin.

Best Time to Witness River Crossings

The river crossings are the most sought-after wildlife spectacle. For the best chances of witnessing this dramatic event:

  • Visit between July and October
  • Spend at least 3-4 days in the northern Serengeti or Maasai Mara
  • Work with experienced guides who know the crossing points

Where to Stay

Strategic accommodation placement is key:

  • Southern Serengeti (Dec-Mar): Focus on the Ndutu area for calving season
  • Western Corridor (May-Jul): Grumeti River area for river crossings
  • Northern Serengeti (Jul-Oct): Kogatende area for Mara River crossings

Why Choose Tanzania

While the Maasai Mara offers excellent viewing, the Serengeti provides:

  • Greater protected area with less crowding
  • More diverse wildlife density
  • Authentic wilderness experience
  • Better long-term conservation efforts
