Trek Tanzania's spectacular volcanic cone with breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro
Overview
Trek Tanzania's spectacular volcanic cone with breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro
Mount Meru is Tanzania's second highest mountain at 4,562 meters (14,968 feet) and offers an incredible trekking experience. Located within Arusha National Park, this stratovolcano provides stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and diverse wildlife encounters.
The trek is perfect for acclimatization before Kilimanjaro, or as a standalone adventure for those seeking a shorter but equally rewarding mountain experience. The route passes through varied ecosystems including rainforest, heath, and alpine desert.
Mount Meru's dramatic crater rim and lush slopes make it a hidden gem for adventure seekers. Unlike Kilimanjaro, you'll often have the trails to yourself, creating a more intimate wilderness experience.
The classic Mount Meru climbing experience
Drive from Moshi to Arusha National Park. Begin trek through rainforest to Miriakamba Hut at 2,514m. Watch for colobus monkeys and colorful birds.
Trek through heath and moorland zones to Saddle Hut at 3,570m. Afternoon optional climb to Little Meru for sunset views.
Early morning summit attempt to Socialist Peak (4,562m). Descend via Rhino Point and back to Miriakamba Hut for overnight.
Final descent through rainforest to Momella Gate. Transfer back to Moshi. Celebration lunch included!
Build your confidence and altitude tolerance with a Mount Meru trek before attempting Kilimanjaro.
