Continue to Ngorongoro Crater to explore its remarkable landscapes and diverse wildlife before ending your journey in Lake Manyara National Park, known for its forested habitats, birdlife and scenic lakeshore.
With departures from Arusha or Moshi and two nights in Karatu, this itinerary offers a practical way to experience northern Tanzania’s wildlife and landscapes in a short time.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Among the Baobabs of Tarangire National Park
Your safari begins with a morning departure from Arusha or Moshi, travelling towards Tarangire National Park. As the landscape opens into dry savannah dotted with ancient baobab trees, the park introduces you to one of northern Tanzania's distinctive wildlife environments. Spend the day exploring Tarangire on a game drive, looking out for elephants moving across the plains, giraffes browsing among the trees, zebras grazing in the grasslands and other wildlife that inhabits the park. The Tarangire River is an important water source, attracting animals and creating opportunities for wildlife viewing, particularly during the dry season. Beyond the wildlife, the park's enormous baobabs and changing landscapes give the day its own character. After your game drive, continue to Karatu for the evening and your overnight stay, ready for the following day's journey into Ngorongoro Crater.
Day 2: Into the Ngorongoro Crater
Today takes you into the remarkable Ngorongoro Crater, one of Tanzania's most celebrated wildlife destinations. Descending from the crater rim, you enter a vast landscape enclosed by steep walls, where open grasslands, patches of woodland and wetlands support a remarkable variety of wildlife. Spend the day on a crater game drive, watching for wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes, elephants and other animals across the crater floor. With luck, you may also encounter lions or spot the endangered black rhinoceros. Wildlife sightings vary, but the diversity of habitats makes this a rewarding destination to explore. The scenery is just as memorable as the wildlife. The contrast between the open crater floor and the surrounding highlands creates a setting unlike the savannah landscapes of Tarangire. After your exploration, return to Karatu for your second overnight stay, bringing you closer to the final destination of your safari.
Day 3: Discover the Varied Landscapes of Lake Manyara National Park
On your final day, journey to Lake Manyara National Park, a destination known for its combination of groundwater forest, open woodland, grassy areas and lakeside scenery. Its varied habitats offer a different perspective on northern Tanzania's wildlife compared with the previous two parks. Enjoy a game drive through the park, keeping an eye out for elephants, baboons, giraffes, zebras and a variety of birdlife. Depending on the season and water levels, the lake may also attract large numbers of waterbirds. Lake Manyara is also known for its tree-climbing lions, although sightings are never guaranteed. As your safari draws to a close, take in the changing scenery one last time before beginning your return journey to Arusha or Moshi. Three days, three different landscapes and a memorable introduction to Tanzania's northern wildlife circuit bring your private safari to an end.
